    ASI QUESTION BY QUESTION MANUAL

The Q by Q, provides in depth instructions on asking each question on the ASI. We consider the ASI a guide to a conversation. It is quite simply a set of questions that you may find useful in gathering information about your patients. We hope that you use this information to create an individual treatment plan for each patient.

The following information about each item on the ASI is provided for you:

Intent/Key points: The information contained in this section describes why the question was originally included on the ASI.

Suggested Interviewing Techniques: We recognize that for many patients entering treatment, answering many seemingly meaningless questions can be tiresome. In this section, we offer what we feel are the most efficient ways to phrase each question.

Additional Probes: A probe is a question that does not appear on the ASI. The probe may provide information that helps you to understand the patient's problems more fully. The ASI has been recognized by its creators as the minimum number of questions that one would need to begin a treatment plan.

Coding Issues: Coding is the term used to describe the act of recording the information you receive from the patient, into the boxes provided for you, with a numerical "code."

Crosscheck item with: Similar bits of information are gathered in several sections of the ASI. For some items on the ASI, we provide a list of a few other items that are related to it within the interview.

    COMMON QUESTIONS AND ERRORS

This guide was developed based on some the most common questions and errors that continue to arise during the administration of the Addiction Severity Index and the supervision of those administering the ASI. This manual along with the ASI Checkers manual should be a part of every supervisors library and an active part of any quality assurance program to develop and maintain coding consistency within a program.

    ASI CHECKERS MANUAL

The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is a semi-structured interview, which has been used widely for substance abuse treatment planning and evaluation. As with any procedure where judgment is involved, the ASI works most successfully within an environment where a mechanism exists for the individuals administering it to have their work regularly checked for accuracy, consistency and completeness. The purpose of this manual is to provide guidelines for the individuals who are responsible for the integrity of the data collected.

FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES FOR LOCATING OUT OF TREATMENT CLIENTS

This manual was prepared to discuss the follow-up procedure and is extended to supplement the Addiction Severity Index training manual. The explanation was two part. First, the format changes required making the ASI function, as a follow-up interview will be explained. In the second part of the discussion, procedures that may be helpful to interviewers in locating clients who have left the treatment setting and are due for a follow-up interview will be explained.

A GUIDE TO ADAPTING THE ADDICTION SEVERITY INDEX FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS

Adaptations are needed to make the instrument more comprehensive in order to obtain information required by various sources. These funding sources include grant agencies, federal, state, and local funding, or - in this current era of healthcare - managed care, PPO, or other insurance related funding requirements. Additional information not currently covered in the ASI is also necessary for accreditation with such agencies as the JCAHO. Still other projects will want to add additional sections, such as the JCAHO version that has additional sections on leisure time activities and spirituality. The additional instructions, questions, or sections needed will be dictated by the needs of your particular population, research study, or governing agency. This manual provides states, agencies, principal investigators and project directors with guidelines to follow in order to add questions and or sections to the ASI to customize it to meet identified needs while not jeopardizing the instruments reliability, validity and composite score formulations.
